Growing up, the 4th of the July was always one of my favorite holidays.
Set smack dab in the middle of summer break, it was the perfect time for festivities. BBQ. Cakes. Pies. Watermelon. And of course… fireworks!
I would count down the minutes until the sun set so we could watch the massive fireworks show that my town put on every year.
At the time, I wished I could have taken a perfect picture of the reds, whites, blues, golds, and purples. In my mind, that would have captured the feeling of the fourth.
As I got older, I realized that it wasn’t just the thunderous explosions or the fantastic food that made it such an important event.
It was how the community got together to celebrate our country, our family, and each other.
PLANNING THE PERFECT 4TH OF JULY PARTY

• Date. Don’t mess this up. Don’t be cute or creative. Have your party on the 4th.
• Location. The best parties are held at your house or a local park. If you go with a public setting, reserve space early in advance.
• Food. The main course is grilled food. It doesn’t matter if you’re a carnivore or a vegetarian. Grill anything and everything you possibly can. Other than that, the possibilities are endless! Cakes, pies, cookies, watermelon, corn on the cob, salads. This is the perfect holiday to enlist help for side dishes and deserts. Have your guests bring their specialties!
• Pro Tip: Enlist the help of a second grill master. That way you’re not chained to the grill all day!

• Music. Spotify Playlists are great for this. Fire up some patriotic music. Throw in a wide range from John Philip Sousa to John Mellencamp. Keep it upbeat and fun, but also something that would bring a tear to a bald eagle’s eye.
• Activities. Obviously, most people will say fireworks. Whether it’s the kind you set off yourself or the spectacular shows that you watch, many people love the booms, bangs, and colors of fireworks. But go the extra step and provide games for everyone. Our favorites are carnival games, a scavenger hunt, and relay races.
